The Prime Minister of Niue, Hon. Dalton Tagelagi, on behalf of Cabinet, has announced the decision to conclude the term of the Members Assisting Ministers (MAMs) early, with their roles officially ending on 30 September 2024.

This decision, despite the outcomes of the recent referendum on expanding Cabinet, is part of the government's commitment to enhancing transparency and effective governance.

The MAM role, which has served as a support function to Cabinet Ministers, did not carry decision-making powers or voting rights, akin to the role of a public servant. While MAMs played an important part in providing assistance, the position has often led to misunderstandings about the scope of their influence.

Prime Minister Tagelagi expressed gratitude to the current MAMs for their dedication and contributions:

  • Mr. Muiakituki Ricky Makani, Member for Tamakautoga – MAM for Infrastructure
  • Ms. Kahealani Sinahemana Hekau, Common Roll Member – MAM for Central Agencies
  • Mrs. Maureen Melekitama, Member for Mutalau – MAM for Social Services
  • Mr. Emani Fakaotimanava-Lui, Common Roll Member – MAM for Natural Resources

We thank the MAMs for their service and support to our Ministers, which has been invaluable in our efforts to serve Niue, said Prime Minister Tagelagi.
