The European Union Ambassador to Niue, Her Excellency Barbara Plinkert officially presented her Letter of Credentials to the Prime Minister of Niue, Hon. Dalton Tagelagi and Cabinet on Monday 16th September 2024.

The presentation represents an important step in further strengthening the diplomatic ties between the Government of Niue and the European Union.

Ambassador Plinkert arrived in Niue on Friday 13 September 2024. During her visit, she will engage in a series of meetings with government departments and stakeholders to discuss ongoing and future cooperation. A key highlight of her visit includes touring EU-funded project sites, such as the new oxygen plant at Niue Foou Hospital and various water tank projects across the island.

The EU has been instrumental in supporting Niue’s energy sector through various initiatives focused on renewable energy production and energy efficiency. From 2014 to 2020, these collaborative projects significantly benefitted Niue’s energy infrastructure.

The Prime Minister of Niue, Hon. Dalton Tagelagi acknowledged and welcomed the visit of the EU Ambassador to Niue, stating,

"It is a privilege to welcome the EU Ambassador to Niue, Her Excellency Barbara Plinkert. The European Union's support over the years has been invaluable in advancing our nation's development. From strengthening our energy sector to enhancing critical infrastructure, the EU’s contributions have played a vital role in Niue's progress. We look forward to continuing this strong partnership and exploring new opportunities for collaboration that will further benefit the growth and well-being of our island."

The Government of Niue wishes the Ambassador a safe journey as she departs the island at the end of the week and looks forward to further strengthening its cooperation with the European Union in the future.
