Niue’s Official Tropical Cyclone Season for 2024/2025 ended on the 30th April 2025.

The season started on the 01st November 2024 to 30th April 2025. The possibility of cyclone forming outside of the season is rare but not impossible.

During the 2024 to 2025 Tropical Cyclone Season, there were 11 Tropical Disturbances; to which only 3 developed into a Tropical cyclone, and none were severe. Tropical Cyclones that were developed were TC Pita (Category 2), TC Rae (Category 2) and TC Alfred (Category 2). Only TD03F, TC Pita and TD08F were located near Niue, within 300km from the Island.

TD03F: Highest Average wind speed recorded was 29km/hr, gusting at 57km/hr on land. Tide gauge at the wharf recorded an average wind speed of 72 km/hr, with gust at 83km/hr. The highest daily rainfall from this system was 183.5mm, with the closest distance to Niue was 160km. Impacts from this system was fallen trees, closing of roads and flooding in low lying areas.

Tropical Cyclone Pita: Highest average wind speed was 27km/hr, with gust at 68km/hr on land. Tide gauge recorded an average wind speed of 35 km/hr and gust to 46km/hr. The highest daily rainfall from this system was 127.0mm, and the closest distance to Niue was 30 km.
TD08F: This system was the 3rd closest to Niue at 230km, rainfall of 60.9mm and moderate to fresh winds. No significant impact was observed from this.

The prediction for 2024/2025 tropical cyclone activity for the region was 6 to 10 cyclones expected to form and 3 to 4 severe cyclones reaching Category 3 or higher for the southwest pacific. Niue was predicted to be affected by 1 to 2 cyclones. However, this season observed only 4 systems that formed into a Tropical cyclone, with none developing further into at category 3 or higher. Niue’s activity for the season was almost accurate, with 1 Tropical Cyclone (TC Pita) that tracked close to the island. The sea surface temperature was warmer than average, however the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) remained neutral during this period.

Director Rossy Mitiepo, states “MET will continue to provide early warning on weather, climate systems and hazards that may pose threat to Niue. We also appreciate the support from everyone in the community to do their part in being vigilant and being always prepared, in and outside of cyclone season.”
