The Niue Renewable Energy project currently being constructed near the airport comprises a 2.79MWp photovoltaic solar array, 8.19MWh Battery Energy Storage System and significant upgrades to the Niue electricity network to increase safety and resilience. The project will contribute to (our) the Government of Niue’s target of 80% renewable energy by 2025.

The project will be completed mid-2026 when the Government of Niue under the Department of Utility and Niue Power Corporation (NPC) will take over the ownership. We anticipate savings of 816,000 litres of fuel and 2,202 tCO2e in year one. It will support Niue to deliver on our climate goals and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Community engagement and education will support the long-term success of the project. A targeted Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education programme for schools will be delivered in partnership with the Government of Niue Department of Education in 2026.

The New Zealand Government has invested $20.5 million and Sunergise have been engaged as the contractor to install the system. Sunergise are currently constructing concrete blocks for the PV array foundations.

Please be advised that there will be planned electricity outages over the next few months to start on the network upgrade of transformers and also in preparation for the integration of new PV system and batteries. NPC will provide community notices well in advance of these events.

The Government of Niue is committed to working alongside the community to ensure the success of this project. We will provide regular updates on this site. If you have any queries, please contact niue.secgov@gov.nu
