The Office of the Regulator has been informed by Space X that, effective 22nd August 2024, they have deactivated Starlink roaming services across the globe. This action has been taken as part of their efforts to address the issue of unauthorized users in unlicensed jurisdictions, such as Niue.

This step marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to ensure that the introduction and use of new technologies are aligned with Niue’s regulatory framework and national interests. The deactivation of Starlink roaming services demonstrates the company’s commitment to adhering to global and local regulations, promoting the responsible deployment of new technology.

In light of this development, the ICT Advisory Committee will host a national stakeholder consultation next Wednesday, 4th September 2024, at Niue Golf Club, Fonuakula, Alofi at 10am -12pm to discuss the future of Starlink internet services in Niue. This consultation will be an opportunity to share ideas and find the best way to use this technology for the benefit of our community.

We understand the delays in working with Starlink administrators due to their commitments with other jurisdictions, but we are focused on ensuring a clear understanding of these services for Niue. The ICT Advisory Committee invites all interested parties, including services providers, business and the public, to participate in this important dialogue. Your input is crucial in shaping a robust and sustainable internet services framework for Niue.
