Realm leaders reaffirm the importance of partnership, shared values and cooperation across the Realm
The Prime Minister of Niue, Hon. Dalton Tagelagi, and the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Rt Hon. Christopher Luxon, met in Auckland today for the inaugural Realm of New Zealand Leaders’ Meeting, co‑hosted by Niue and New Zealand. They were joined by Hon. Mark Brown, Prime Minister of the Cook Islands, and Hon. Alapati Tavite, Ulu of Tokelau, the first time all four leaders have met together as leaders of the Realm.
The meeting provided an opportunity for leaders to reflect on the enduring strength of the Realm relationship and discuss how it continues to evolve to meet the aspirations and priorities of each partner.
Prime Minister Tagelagi said the discussions highlighted that the Realm relationship remains firmly grounded in people and in the close connections shared across the Realm.
"Our relationship has always been about partnership. For Niue, it is about maintaining our unique identity while working together where we have common interests and shared goals," Prime Minister Tagelagi said.
Leaders reflected on significant milestones across the Realm. Discussions also focused on the opportunities and challenges facing the Pacific region, including the need to build resilient economies, strengthen communities, create opportunities for young people, and ensure a secure future for coming generations.
Prime Minister Tagelagi said the meeting reaffirmed the value of cooperation among Realm partners.
"While each Realm partner has its own identity, aspirations and priorities, we share a strong history, constitutional ties and common values. These connections place us in a unique position to support one another, amplify our collective voice and work together on issues important to our peoples and the wider Pacific."
The meeting also provided an opportunity to look ahead to next week's Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting in Palau and to New Zealand's hosting of the Forum in 2027.
Prime Minister Tagelagi thanked fellow Realm leaders for their continued commitment to strengthening cooperation and ensuring the Realm partnership continues to deliver meaningful benefits for their peoples and communities.
