The Premier of Niue, Hon. Dalton Tagelagi and the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of New Zealand, the Right Honourable Winston Peters held a bilateral discussion today at Cabinet’s Office, Fale Fono II.

This meeting follows the visit of the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Rt Hon. Christopher Luxon to Niue on the 3rd June 2024, and further strengthens the enduring partnership between the two nations.

During the discussions, the focus was on New Zealand’s continued commitment to supporting Niue’s Renewable Energy project and enhancing bilateral cooperation. The Deputy Prime Minister outlined key priorities and announced New Zealand’s support for several initiatives critical to Niue’s development.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized New Zealand’s support for the Government of Niue’s priorities in the public sector. He announced funding for new roles to strengthen Niue’s public sector capacity, including public financial management positions for the Ministry of Finance and Climate Change. Additionally, Rt Hon Peters committed to renovating the rooftop of the old Fale Fono building in Alofi. These measures aim to alleviate short-term workforce constraints and enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of Niue’s government operations.

The Deputy Prime Minister conveyed his gratitude on behalf of the New Zealand government to the people of Niue, expressing optimism about the future of the partnership and the positive impact of the support initiatives.
