On Monday 26th August 2024, the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting commenced in Nuku’alofa, Tonga. This year’s forum themed “A Transformative and Resilient Pasifiki: Build Better Now,” reflecting a collective commitment to addressing the challenges facing the Blue Pacific continent and to foster collaboration and cooperation.

Hosted by the Government of Tonga, the forum sees Tonga’s Prime Minister, Honourable Hu'akavameiliku serving as the
Chairperson. Tonga’s vision for the 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting is to move beyond policy deliberation towards tangible implementation, aiming to achieve transformation by building better now.

Today, the Premier of Niue, Hon. Dalton Tagelagi delivered a key statement at the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders plenary. In his address, the Premier expressed his appreciation to the people and government of the Kingdom of Tonga for their warm hospitality and the shared experiences of extreme weather and climate events that challenge the region.

The theme for this year’s forum leaders meeting encapsulates our collective determination not only to recover from the challenges we face but also to build a future that is more resilient, equitable, and sustainable.

Premier Tagelagi emphasized the importance of regional solidarity, calling on Pacific leaders to leverage the outcomes of previous forum meetings, drive forward with innovative solutions, and ensure that development efforts are inclusive and forward-looking. He reiterated the desire for a prosperous future for the people and future generations of the Pacific, noting that a united forum is central to achieving this vision.

“Let us remind ourselves that the Forum serves as a platform for candid discussions on shared challenges and opportunities,” the Premier remarked. “We must remain committed to building consensus and maintaining unity within our Pacific family so that we can achieve our shared aspirations together” said Premier of Niue, Hon. Dalton Tagelagi.

The Premier concluded his address by urging all leaders to continue participating actively and to make significant progress in building a more prosperous, secure, and resilient region. “We must take bolder action in the face of climate change and other challenges”.

The 53rd Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Plenary meeting will continue with further discussions and deliberations focused on the future of the Pacific region.
