Prime Minister Hon. Dalton Tagelagi of Niue met with State Minister Horii in Tokyo yesterday, as Niue and Japan mark 10 years of diplomatic relations this year.
The meeting built on their engagement at the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting in the Cook Islands in 2023 and Niue’s participation in PALM10 last year. Prime Minister Tagelagi acknowledged Japan’s enduring support for Pacific Island countries, while State Minister Horii reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to strengthening ties under the PALM framework.
Discussions focused on shared priorities including climate change, sustainable development, disaster preparedness, and ocean conservation. Both sides emphasized the importance of Kizuna a bond of trust as the foundation of Japan Pacific relations, and highlighted the values of sovereignty, peace, and stability that underpin their partnership.
Looking ahead, Niue and Japan will collaborate on initiatives such as the Oceans of Peace campaign and explore opportunities for engagement at major events, including the Green Expo in Yokohama in 2027. The meeting underscored confidence that these efforts will contribute to a more secure, sustainable, and prosperous Pacific region, while celebrating a decade of friendship between Niue and Japan.
