The Government of Niue wishes to provide an update to the public following the disruption to international internet services that occurred on the afternoon of Tuesday 4th August 2026.

The outage affected internet connectivity across the island and resulted in reduced service for homes, businesses and government agencies. Since the incident occurred, the Government has been working closely with Telecom Niue and has received further information from the Manatua Cable partners regarding the cause of the disruption.

Initial investigations indicate that the issue has been traced to equipment within the submarine cable network located offshore from Samoa. Current technical assessments suggest the fault is related to the cable system itself, with no indication at this stage that it was caused by external events.

While internet services have remained available, the public may continue to experience slower connection speeds and reduced network performance until permanent repairs can be completed.

The Government understands the impact this disruption has had on the community and acknowledges the inconvenience experienced by residents, businesses and organisations that depend on reliable internet connectivity for communication, education and day-to-day operations.

Repairing the fault will require a specialised cable repair vessel and technical crew to undertake work on the submarine cable system. Planning for these repairs is currently underway through the Manatua Cable partners.

The Government of Niue and Telecom Niue will continue to monitor the situation closely and will keep the public informed as further technical assessments are completed and repair arrangements progress.

The Government thanks the people of Niue for their patience and understanding while work continues to restore the cable system to full capacity.
