For the past week, we have been diligently operating with three generators, while awaiting the necessary repairs for the fourth generator. The Cabinet of the Government of Niue (GON) today announced that it would continue to retain the current retail petroleum fuel and gas prices but has approved an increase in the cost of jet fuel.

The retention of current petroleum fuel and gas prices means that retail petrol prices will stay at $3.50cpl, and retail diesel prices will be retained at $3.70cpl.  GONs Cabinet has decided that there will be no change to powerhouse diesel pricing, which is also retained at $3.11cpl.  Read more…

The Niue Health Department has detected 1 new border case of COVID-19 in the group of 64 passengers who arrived on the 4th of July 2022 as a part of day 1 testing.  An additional 2 border cases were detected during day 7 testing for household close contacts of those positive cases that arrived on the 27th of June 2022.  The 2 positive household close contacts have been in isolation since day 1 testing on the 28th of June and have not been in the community. This evening we detected another 4 cases of COVID-19 that have arrived in our country.  These cases arrived on the flight to Niue on Monday 21 March 2022 as part of a flight of 38 passengers who all tested negative prior to departure. A total of 36 tests has been carried out. Two children on the flight were not tested beforehand as both are under the age of 3 and are asymptomatic. Read more…

The COVID-19 national alert codes were put in place 2 years ago when the pandemic first started affecting countries worldwide.  After review of the alert levels and taking into consideration the COVID-19 response experiences from overseas countries as well as Niue’s own national preparation and response. The Government of Niue (GON) announced today that Niue’s index (first positive) case of COVID-19 will have to complete a 14-day quarantine period, as per protocols for a positive case.

The close contact of the case will also remain in quarantine for a further period of time and monitored by health officials until cleared.

The Government of Niue today announced that it had approved the rollout of its Pfizer and BioNTech (Comirnaty) programme to vaccinate its children aged 5 to 11 years of age starting on 14 February 2022.  Niue is one of the few countries in the world to be COVID-19 free and has fully vaccinated over 97% of its eligible population aged 12 years and older.  Over 96% of the 18-year-olds and over have received their booster shots in the past two weeks.
